20 Best Taylor Swift Lyrics

If you know anything about me, you know I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan and have been from the beginning. (I wrote an article about it in college, which you can read here). While I miss her Fearless days, with her glittery guitar and cowboy boots, I've enjoyed her pop hits with an equal  I think what first drew me to Taylor Swift was her ability to put into words exactly what I was feeling at each stage of my life. Her songwriting strength lies in her ability to capture specific emotions and specific moments and draw listeners into that experience. It's something that inspires me in my own writing life.

Below are a list of some of my favorite lyrics of hers that do just this. Some of them are artistically brilliant; others are lyrics I heard at the precise moment I needed to be reminded I am not alone.

You call me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
– All Too Well (Red)

I can't say hello to you and risk another goodbye
– I Almost Do (Red)

You and I are a story that never gets told
What you are is a day dream, I'll never get to hold
– Stay Beautiful (Taylor Swift)

You put up the walls and paint them all a shade of gray
And I stood there loving you, and wished them all away
And you come away with a great little story
Of a mess of a dreamer with the nerve to adore you
– Cold As You (Taylor Swift)

I guess it's true that love was all you wanted
'Cause you're givin' it away like it's extra change
Hoping it will end up in his pocket
But he leaves you out like a penny in the rain
Oh, 'cause it's not his price to pay
– Tied Together With A Smile (Taylor Swift)

All the girls that you've run dry have tired lifeless eyes
Cause you've burned them out
But I took your matches
Before fire could catch me
– Dear John (Speak Now)

This is me praying that
This was the very first page
Not where the story line ends
My thoughts will echo your name
Until I see you again
– Enchanted (Speak Now)

Time turns flames to embers
You'll have new Septembers
– Innocent (Speak Now)

You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now
If only you had seen what you know now then
– Innocent (Speak Now)

Nothing safe is worth the drive and I would
Follow you, follow you home
– Treacherous (Red)

You wear your best apology,
But I was there to watch you leave
– The Last Time (Red)

The drought was the very worst
When the flowers that we'd grown together died of thirst
– Clean (1989)

You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered
The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color
– Out of the Woods (1989)

Wonder how many girls he had loved and left haunted
– ...Ready For It? (Reputation)

Someday when you leave me
I bet these memories
Follow you around
– Wildest Dreams (1989)

Back then I swore I was gonna marry him someday
But I realized some bigger dreams of mine
– Fifteen (Fearless)

They've got the cages, they've got the boxes and guns
They are the hunters, we are the foxes and we run
– I Know Places (1989)

Words, how little they mean, when you're a little too late
Good girls, hopeful they'll be and long they will wait
– Sad, Beautiful, Tragic (Red)

Love is a ruthless game unless you play it good and right
– State of Grace (Red)

The battle's in your hands now
But I would lay my armor down
If you'd say you'd rather love than fight
– The Story of Us (Speak Now)
